Hell, I probably wouldn't even bother if the speedometer didn't work. I _know_ I wouldn't bother as long as the speedometer works. |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
Southfork, either pull the speedo head out of the dash yourself or take it to a mechanic you trust to pull it out. Once it's out it will have to be sent out to someone who specializes in repairing speedometers.
If the repair shop can repair it - well and good. If not, you can get a used one from a salvage yard. I don't know where you live, but here in PA you have to be licensed to repair speedometers. Good luck. |

I wouldn't worry about it. Just when you sell it 2 years from now tell the buyer it quit a couple months ago.  It isn't worth spending the $$ to get it fixed.

Quality, job number one. It was design to break in a timely fashion; this helps maintains the resale value of the vehicle. |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
Continue to use and only repair things that prevent it from moving and stopping. Any large amount of money or time spent on this vehicle is a waste.

:D I wonder why Ford is going bankrupt while Toyota/Honda are booming in America... |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
It's rubbish. Trade it in for a Hummer with over sized tires and spinners.
Personalize the license plates with "Sheik ur Booty" and cruise the titty bars. Only then will you be accepted. :aetsch: Actually a Crown Vic is not a bad car. I don't know about that year in particular but generally it gets good ratings. As long as the gas gauge works you can still have a pretty good idea how many miles you've gone. I wouldn't worry about it. |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
buy a new one........what are you doing?.....spending it on PMs.........very un-American of you.......if I might say:hahaha:

Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
The Crown Vic and rest of the panther bodies are among the best cars the American auto companies still crank out. They're built in Canada these days, which beats Mexico any day in my book. Check out the following site for help,
www.crownvic.net I've been a big fan of these V-8, full frame rear wheel drive cars ever since my days as a taxi driver. There is no car put out by any competitor that can hold a candle to a Vic after 400,000 or 500,000 miles. The Caprice's in the fleets I drove for started falling apart around 200,000, the Lumina's were about the same. When I'm rich, assuming our country hasn't collapsed, I'll be driving around in a Kenny Brown customized Vic. |

Damn, now this just makes me want to trade my Hummer in and pick me up a Vic. All white, like an unmarked cop car. Nice.

Try one and you'll junk your hummer. |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
I'll second that. A classic sedan like a Vic outclasses a sport futility vehicle in just about every respect from speed, handling, gas mileage, practical cargo capacity(21 cubit feet of trunkspace!), safety, passenger capacity and comfort, they'll even tow quite a bit with a frame mounted hitch. The only place you lose out is on ground clearance.

Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
I'll just be the contrary butthead to state the obvious: buy jap and forget such trivial problems. It's absolutely confounding to read and hear first hand tale after freaking tale of the most basic components failing on American vehicles.

Is it giving a code at all? Is the check engine light on?

Since your speedometer works fine I am assuming your cruise control is also working fine.
You say odometer or trip meter is not working so we can eliminate the Speed Sensor which is the cheap and easy fix and would be the suspect if the cruise and speedometer were not working. The part you need is a plastic gear that runs about 30 bucks but is a pain to R&R. This is a picture. The parts are brittle, particularly if you live in harsh or extreme climates. |
Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
I gotta agree with curtman. I tired fixing a mechanical Odometer once. Had it all tore apart and what had happened was that a spacer sleeve had worn just enough to keep the main scrolling numbers from engaging a gear. I jury rigged it by wrapping a paper clip around where the sleeve should be and it was broke again within two months. The car was a beater commuter so I just said to hell with it. Pulling the head just wasn't worth the time and effort IMHO.

Re: 1992 Crown Victoria help Please
To all who like the Crown Vic and I AM one of those people, here is a site to pick up a used police cruiser. The less miles, the more they cost.
But for around $15k you can get a used 2006 P71 Crown Vic. You might even get to choose color if their inventory is up. For around $6k you can get the same car, but a little older with a lot more miles (1999 P71 Crown Vic). http://www.southern-interceptors.com/Inventory.html |
